  • is a protein shake "fast" a good idea?

    i'm thinking of doing a protein shake "fast"
     
    just to consume enough protein a day so the body has enough to repair.
    my concern is health but also vanity.
    my hair has thinned out quite a lot and i don't want to risk losing more.
     
    i'm concerned only consuming protein will leave me constipated. 
     
    any thoughts, suggestions?

      My diet isn't a full protein shake fast but it's like 75% protein shakes. I would recommend getting a premade shake or mix with higher protein to prevent constipation

        Second the above.. Plus, unless you have an extremely yummy protein powder (do those even exist!?), you will get sick of the taste really, really quickly. I did a 3 day protein shake fast with powder and premixed shakes, and by the end of it.. Only the premade. I lost about 5 pounds in those 3 days.

        I've thought of doing this at some point. I'd probably get some lemon and ginger tea to have as well to help stay regular. There are other teas that have that effect but lemon and ginger works for me.

          No, you could throw off your kidneys and end up with renal failure. Due your research on "high protein diets" even though this is not really a diet but a fast.

          1. This isn't fasting, it's a mono-food restriction diet.

          2. Most protein shakes have fat and carbs too so you won't enter ketosis but you also likely won't experience jack rabbit fever, which is what the writer above means.

          3. If you plan to use a zero carb protein powder such as isopure zero then be aware that a diet that is pure protein will result in too much Nitrogen building up in your body and overload your body's ability to clear it which can cause permanent damage and even death.

          I know there is disagreement over what consists a fast, that's why I used the inverted commas. Lots of people here call not having solid food a fast. They do liquid fasts, like for instance, juice fasts.

          From Wikipedia: "Longer-term ketosis may result from fasting or staying on a low-carbohydrate diet."

          Since the calorie deficit is huge and the glycogen reserves will be depleted, if the body is not in ketosis, what will it do instead for energy? Consume muscle and leave the fat?

          Is this any amount of protein that is consumed on its own? I do not plan on consuming a lot.

            When not in ketosis and in Valerie deficit the body will run mostly on sugar created by the kidneys and liver created out of amino acids taken from muscle breakdown.

            As for eating a little protein, the ratio of protein to fat and vans is what matters. If you eat 100% calories from protein and just 500 calories per day you'll still wind up with Nitrogen overload.
