1. After a fast you'll find that even though youre very hungry you get full very easily. Your stomach is likely smaller, so take advatage of it. It may take a few tries to not give into the temptation of binging, but remember it is never good to break a fast with a huge heavy meal. Try try try to only eat till youre full.
2.Whatever it is youre eating, no matter how small, only eat half of it. Especially if its something high in calories. You only eat foods like cookies and cakes for the flavor, so it is really only worth a bite or two. just pack it up and save it for later.
3. Speaking of bites, limit yourself to 3-4 bites. I dont mean mouthfuls, (dont stuff your face) just normal little bites. Either throw the rest away or save it for later.
5. If youre at a party, have one bite of what you want. Always have a cup of water in one hand too.
6. Eat kid size portions of everything.
7. Tiny plates, tiny utensils.
8. Never eat anything with a volume bigger than your fist. Thats how much you need to fill your stomach.
9. Serving sizes just let you know how many calories youre eating. My parents bought these little bags of crackers and the box they came in says that a serving size is 2 bags for 110 calories, but who needs 2 bags of crackers? So i took one which is 55 calories, and only ate half of that. I put the rest in my bag to eat for lunch. At lunch i only ate like two and ate the rest throughout the school day.
10. Theres a thread on here about what skinny people with out ed's eat. And most people say that their skinny friends eat very little amounts/portions! Someone said something along the lines of them knowing a girl who made a personal size bag of chips last a week or so.

1. Set an amount of calories that is less than you usually eat and that you know you won't go over
2. Keep track of calories
3. Fasting can help you eat less but build up the hours of a fast, I went from a 16 hour fast to a 24 hour fast and I wasn't used to it and binged
4. Drink water, actually it's really good for you if you drink at least 2.5 liters a day (use a water bottle, that helps)
5. Eat filling foods, not as many carbs or junk food (try to stay away from that)
6. Be aware of what food you binge on, my food is peanut butter and bread so I try to stay away from that
7. Know that it is possible to do this even if it may seem hard to start, just be confident that it will work because it won't happen right away, it will be a bit hard
Good luck with it and if you ever need to ask you can probably ask people on chat or just ask me!

Also, when you do eat, make sure you are eating filling, nutritious foods. Don't just waste your food on empty calories. I like to eat things with a higher protein content, like eggs, greek yogurt, and such. It holds me so much longer than something like a cookie would, and that's less time I have to resist being hungry.

How to eat less?

Hi everybody. I currently weigh 254lb and want to start the ABC diet. The problem is- I have a serious issue with eating everything in sight. I'm used to a whopping 2,500 cal/day diet and simply can't seem to restrict myself the way I need to no matter how much I try. I feel so fat because I can't even stick to a 2,000 cal/day diet without ruining it. Does anyone know how to restrict (particularly for people starting super overweight like me)?

While I'm not a fan of the ABC or 2312 or 6666 or whatever fancy diet, I'd advise the same principle that holds true for every calorie restriction and seems obvious. When the calories are limited, make each count.
Problem is, you need to find them. First go to stat is calorie density. Maybe broccoli is not the best filler, but at 34kcal per 100g you can eat a shitload. Other vegetables are in the same range. Personally I find beans and potatoes more satisfying and stuffing for a long time, especially beans. Which might scare someone at first at about 100kcal per 100g but they stuff me well and are worth their calories. Even some foods with a high calorie density like cheese (300kcal per 100g) can stuff me well for a small amount of calories. Experiment and find out which foods keep you satisfied for a long time! Then concentrate on those foods, make them your staple!

Nooooooooo.
Eat healthy. Slowly lower you caloric intake. Take long walks.Be happy.Smile. Go slow.
I REFUSE to tell you how to be successful in restricting your calories to such an extreme. It has a lot more to do with self hatred than method.
OP, binge eating blows. But dropping calories off quickly, like what is suggested in the ABC diet is 1.) dangerous and 2.) very inneffective.
Please, please go slow and be kind to yourself ![]()

Just lower your intake a little, it'll just lead to binging if you're not used to eating very little. Switch to high-volume foods like veggies so you won't go hungry, but consume little calories. Eat lean meat like chicken and fish at least once a week. Don't deprive yourself of nutriens, no use of losing weight if your heart and organs give out.

Try for more protein instead of carbohydrates... and allow yourself all the salad you can physically eat as it'll be wayyy less than 2000 calories and is totally fine to eat as much as you want of it...
Best higher weight loss to smaller weight advice would be
- diet soft drink/soda/fizzy drinks instead of regular
- 3 liters of water a day is more than enough (you can over hydrate on water too so no more than 3 liters is ever needed just to be safe)
- switch a lot of your carbohydrates for protein or fiber instead, don't remove all carbs as it is dangerous, with your size I think keeping 200 g of carb or under a day will be very good for weight loss for now, my height and size means I can not go over 150 g for weight loss, so 200 g should be real real good for you for weight loss at a higher weight... but again, do not cut all carbs out of your diet as it is unhealthy and dangerous
- make a list of safe foods, these are pretty much salad, any salad, some fruits, some fish maybe? Mainly salad though, if you like it then learn to binge on that to fill you up...
- cardio exercise such as an exercise bike will be useful as it is less pressure on bones and at a heavier weight running could put extra strain on them maybe? depends how bad your bones are as mine are terrible so I can't run without getting shin splints, hell I get shin splints if I walk too fast lol
No need to starve yourself, just switching food choices to better and healthier options is best, and cardio exercise for weight loss and general bodily health and also the endorphin hypothesis...
I bet if you binge on salad 24/7 you'll be under 2000 calories a day, find treats too, you don't want to hate food, lower in fat and carb caramel or chocolate rice cakes are delicious in UK (snack a jacks), so is calorie mate when in Japan (low-ish carb, vitamins are energy)...
At your current weight, you'd easily lose on 1500-1800 calories a day, but if you're desperate then 1500 calories a day, up to 200 g carbs a day, try for 30 g protein or more as protein is better than carb, fiber is good too and water is key for health and regenerating cells and flushing out fat etc.... and cardio exercise that you enjoy and love! Be it bike, any sport, anything you can do whiles watching TV or listening to music and singing... just have fun with it and enjoy the benefits of it's health making...
Ps: try to not have unnecessary sugar aka doughnuts and chocolate and crisp/chips, and cake and biscuits and cookies/etc etc etc... there's no point to them... try to find healthier alternatives that taste awesome and are low sugar, even protein bars can be chocolate flavours and delicious! Just watch the carbs in those bad boys though as they could have a lot depending on brands/etc...
I'm back I guess... joy...

Any exercise is better than no exercise, try to take it slow and eat for healthy and your body's physical function of it's organs, instead of just weight loss, the slower you lose with a healthier diet, the healthier your body will be even if it is underweight, it's best to have strong bones and fully functioning, healthy organs on an underweight person, than having their organs shutting down from severe malnutrition which can cause many health problems and could even lead to an early death...
Do this for yourself, you deserve to be ok and you deserve to have a body you are comfortable in, try to relax and take it slow, remember to breathe, remember to take care of your body in the ways of personal hygiene, diet, exercise and important responsibilities such as work and schooling, remember to study and never stop learning and expanding your mind (it'll lessen the likelihood of Dementia symptoms in the future too!), remember to take every situation as open minded and neutral as possible; there's no reason to jump to anger if you do not know the person or full situation, and if there are logical reasons why a thing happened, and looking at both sides of the argument means you aren't ignorant and stubborn, but are trying to figure out what the most logically best solution to something and coming to the best conclusion that pleases the most people, inc. yourself.
It is not weakness to admit you are wrong about something, it is strength, as think what is harder to do? If you are wrong and are given evidence, accepting it is stronger than getting angry and telling the other person they're wrong and being ignorant and defensive for no reason/etc.
Try not to label yourself, as it can get you stuck in the label and need to continue to do things to stay in the label, instead of working on self improvement and general improvement of life and the world around us... so know that you can escape labels, and know that labels don't have to be permanent, we control our lives and we should take responsibility to make the world a better place and to make our lives as good as we can for ourselves too, think what you would do or want to happen in a situation, not what being such a label means you "should" think like or do, you are you and it is the only you that you have got, let's make it a positive thing, and do our best to the best of our ability... instead of blaming others or sticking to certain mindsets that are damaging for all involved and cause more anxiety and stress than happiness and change...
If you can't change it, there is no reason to worry about it, if you can change it, there is no reason to say it is impossible and somebody else's fault and not take responsibility for our own actions, stay neutral, safe, work on self improvement, take it as slow as you like as anything is better than nothing, even brushing our teeth once a day is better than never brushing them at all, 10 crunches is better than 0 crunches, eating a piece of fruit a week is better than never eating a piece of fruit at all... and hopefully you get where I am going with that lol

You've had lots of good advice and I hope you can take it on board. If you spend some time reading through MPA (especially this part of the forum) you'll see post upon post upon thread, repeatedly, of people following crazy 'diets', fasting, seemingly dropping huge amounts of weight, and then putting it all back on again - before returning to post the same threads and repeat the cycle.
Keep reading and posting and for support. Good luck, but step away from ABC ![]()

I started out gradually. First I switched to eating better and introducing more whole foods into my diet while cutting the bad stuff out. I didn't lose much weight, but once I got accustomed to eating more nutritious foods and lost my desire for junk, I started calorie counting and that's when the weight just fell off. It also helps if you cook for yourself.
If you constantly overeat, it's nearly impossible to jump into such a low calorie diet and actually stick to it.

just drink a lot of water before you eat.. it will fill up your stomach and make you eat less..
Decide the day before what you are going to eat and stick to eat, dont buy anything high in calories and drink water and eat an apple before shopping.
Make a list of what you need and dont bring anything not on the list (or take someone with you holds to your list)
You can always start an accountabilythread to put a little more pressure.. don't know what helps for you personally
Try really hard for two weeks and you will notice your stomach shrinking and you will fysically have a harder time binging.

Excercises, if you can't, then go on long walks.
Drink a whole glass of water before every meal, you'll fill up quicker.
Vegetables! If you live on your own, buy fruit and veggies.
Stay clear of any white food (rice, noodles, pasta in general, oh and bread) of course you can have it every once in a while.
Pm me if you want to lose weigh together, though I'm 162lbs I totally can help you without making you starve yourself -though, detox days are important.

Hello everyone. I'm a 22 years old girl.
I have family issues and I'm feeling really sad from a couple of weeks, I tend to suffer from depression.
From last week i feel the need to binge. I binged for a couple of days last week (it was my first time ever) and i gained weight.
Right now i feel kinda better and i decided to start dieting and eat healthy, but i tend to feel the need to binge during the day...
While i have a meal, or i'm doing something, i'm craving snacks. If i have to eat a smaller portion of food for my diet, i tend to snack some more of it, i feel tempted.
I just finished dinner, it was perfect and i felt full. But then i craved salt snacks and i ate some crackers and bread. damn i love bread ![]()
I feel like if i wouldn't gain weight, I could eat the entire fridge. Even if i feel full or nausea, food is too good. It brings me nice sensations out of this sad period of my life. And then i feel disgusting in the mirror.
How can i overcome this? I don't want to feel the need to binge. It's so stupid cause i'm not hungry but i like the taste of snacks.
I'm normal weight and my goal is to loose 8 pounds. But it seems hell difficult
thank you if you reply! kisses

It seems like OP is asking advice on how to stop binging, and it's a rule to not shame or accuse someone of not having an ED on here... So try to be a bit more mature.
Anyways what I would suggest is to remove any temptations around the house and keep plenty of fruits and veggies around to snack on and to constantly eat instead of having a few meals, that tends to help me.. When you feel like you're going to binge stop and think and ask yourself if you're really hungry or just emotionally.

If you don't have an eating disorder you do not want to be on this site. I know you feel sad but spiralling into an ed won't help anything. If you feel the need to loose weight do it in a healthy weight or get advise from a doctor. Are you on any medication for your depression because if it's causing you to feel this way you might want to look into it (i know this sounds dumb coming from a teenager but I've been down here long enough)

I'm sorry some people are attacking you. My advice is to perhaps peruse the forums and read different threads and you will inevitably find ideas/tips/suggestions I think.

When you feel like you're going to binge stop and think and ask yourself if you're really hungry or just emotionally.
thank you a lot... i live with my parents, who like sweet and salty snacks a lot. chips, sweet brioches, anything. all around the house.
It's not because i'm hungry, i just like the taste. Makes me feel good for those few seconds i'm eating. Then i feel guilty.
I can't resist to bread and i know it's one of the food to not eat when you want to loose some weight, that makes me even sadder because i know i'm gonna gain weight because of it.
I feel like snacking in the evening and night mostly, i know you're not supposed to eat after dinner, is it ok to eat fruits tho? an apple or banana for example? they're not low cal tho.....

Hi there. You mentioned in your post that you tend to suffer from depression and that you have been having family problems. Do you think that this could be contributing to your impulse to binge eat? For many people, binge eating is a way of dealing with emotional problems and stress, and binge eating is actually a fairly common symptom of depression. Have you sought any help for your depression? Is there anyone you can talk to about your problems at home?
If this isn't the reason for your binge eating, then the cause could be physiological. Do you get enough sleep? Drink enough water? Are you eating a well-balanced diet and getting the nutrients you need? If not, all of these could contribute to your binge eating as your body tries to compensate for areas in which it is lacking.
Just some thoughts. I hope I've been of some use. ![]()

For the last 2 months I've been eating at least 5000 calories per day and that's on a good day. It's been a struggle not to self harm and I've gained at least 2 stone? I've been through both cycles, binge restrict cycles, gone vegan and hated myself to death since the beginning of the year. I'm fifteen and i used to be underweight and now I'm healthy weight but I'm constantly terrified of when I'll see the next person smaller than me, yet i judge everyone heavier than me. My goal is to be so skinny people are scared of me, but even then I won't be happy. I've begged my mum for counceling but she's told me i don't need it. I've talked to all sorts of online councelers but none have helped. I've never been diagnosed.
If you don't have an eating disorder you do not want to be on this site. I know you feel sad but spiralling into an ed won't help anything. If you feel the need to loose weight do it in a healthy weight or get advise from a doctor. Are you on any medication for your depression because if it's causing you to feel this way you might want to look into it (i know this sounds dumb coming from a teenager but I've been down here long enough)
i'm here cause i need someone to talk to who feel the same. Yeah, of course i can go to my friends and say "i can't stop eating, i think i'm going crazy". They would look at me like i have severe problems. That's why i'm here, i don't feel well. Sorry if i'm bothering but i don't think we are here to see who has severe or slight ED .... we should help each other

Ah.. You could try getting the healthier versions of things you already like.. So instead of say potato chips, try kale chips or make your own tortilla chips... and there's a lot of great low calorie multigrain breads out there.. Or you could try to fill up on healthy foods and limit those foods you binge on.. Most fruits are low in calories especially berries.. They are much better for you than sweets because they have fiber and other important nutrients (:.. If you really struggle with your binges though and nothing ends up helping I would suggest getting a check up and discussing it with your doctor to make sure you're alright.

Ok thanks a lot! I'm trying to reach my conselour, i'm a junk food lover and i never ate properly. Mostly junk lol
My mother don't want me to go to a specialist for diet, i'll try to talk about this with my conselour and i'll let you know..
I should restrict to fruits for snacking then, allright... I bought the low cal versions of my current favorite snacks (crackers and biscuits) which are about 15 cal both for each piece. But then i think: They're healthy and have low calories, won't do anything if i eat a couple. And then i end up feeling the urge to eat more and more... i feel stupid
I'll try to speak with my conselour next week and exercise well, maybe it gets better.

Think about why you binge when you binge
How you feel?
What you're eating?
When?
Emotions?
Are you stressed, sad?
Bored?
Then try n replace that with something else

another question. please dont get mad at me for asking: but why? for me if i eat 250 calories ill lose they same amount of weight from eating 1000 calories.
i even lost a pound from eating 1200 calories once. so whats the point of eating like 200 calories daily?

The best time to start a new plan or diet is 7 days or so after the last day of your period.
After a while you just get so scared to eat and your list of safe foods dwindles down to nothing.

You need a deficit of 3000 calories to lose 1lb of fat so if you're right it's most likely water weight.
Have you averaged it out over several weeks to accurately compare results? Cos if it's just one day you can't realistically lose in one day.

First to answer the "how" question.
I find if I don't eat regularly it triggers a chain of events in my brain and body.
The result of which is a diminished appetite.
For me personally I feel extreme nausea every morning.
A word of advice, if you eat 200 cals. you'll always lose more weight than eating 1,000 cals.
The lower number creates a higher caloric deficit.
#19
Posted 12 July 2018 - 09:43 AM
1000 and 200 might not seem that big, but over time it makes a significant difference. For me, 1000 cal a day would make me lose 2.6 lbs a week while 200 cal day would make me lose around 5 a week. Every little bit adds up!

Also having obbessive, numbers fall into it as well.
Different for everyone

Distract yourself, like, a lot.
Lick powder cayenne pepper. It won't actually kill your appetite but it'll burn like hell and probably won't make you want to eat anything anytime soon.
Hate a certain soda flavor? Chug a ton of it.
Sugar free popsicles are pretty good at killing my appetite because half my appetite is my mouth wanting food, not my stomach. (I drink about 16 cups of water a day because my medication is INCREDIBLY dehydrating o . e)

Grind up ice in the smoothie maker (for some reason I forgot what it was called) And put liquid crystal lite or mio or whatever in it. Double check that it's 0 cal. Then put it into a bowl and eat it with a spoon, and it tricks your brain, mouth, and stomach into thinking you're eating. Usually mutes my appetite for a few hours if I eat enough of it.

I try to go out of the house, run errands or do groceries (somehow even when I'm famished I manage to control what I buy in the supermarket, I'm too self-conscious in public). Doing some house-cleaning also helps me keep busy. Light activity in general tends to decrease hunger.
Also when none of the above are possible, I just take to my room with a bottle of coke zero and watch non-ed related series or documentaries (ed-related will only cause me to pay MORE attention to hunger).

Activity definitely works. Try eating anything after a workout. It's nauseating. Or at least you can feel less guilty about it.

The less you eat consistently, the less appetite you have. Usually the strongest hunger wave hits when you eat like a "normal person" and then start restricting.

Drinking hot beverages (coffee, tea or hot water for me). Ephedrine, except it only dulls my appetite for a couple of weeks and then stops working, plus it messes with my heart so I don't take it anymore. Konjac root supplements. And if I need to get out of a binge cycle - laxatives - I'm not at all suggesting this, but usually they hurt my stomach or make me nauseous enough that I am not interested in binging for a couple of days, which then helps me get back into restriction.
If it's really food that I need, filling up on low calorie foods - air popped popcorn, lots of veggies, etc. I usually leave some room in my daily allotment for a bowl of air popped popcorn (plain) at night in case I can't sleep due to hunger.

Walking a lot.
Moving the past few weeks and unpacking/organizing and carrying boxes was so easy to restrict for some reason.
Also yesterday I ate some farmer's market lettuce before realizing it was infested with some weird creature I can't even think about because I'll gag but it KILLED my appetite. Honestly if I need an appetite suppressant I'll just think of this nightmare

Tbh... vyvanse. That shit literally annihilates your appetite. I can barely manage one protein bar a day. Not just that but for some reason it actually banishes the notion of food out of my head??? Whereas it used to monopolise my thoughts and I'd think of when I'm gonna eat next, I genuinely forget to now. (I'm not abusing it for weight loss reasons, I really struggle with ADHD) but before that, I'd have lots of sugar free juice, low cal hot chocolates and vegan bouillon cubes.
The five bite diet (which I'm on but I used to be on two bars a day) really "shrinks" your stomach. I know people have a vendetta against monos but after a b/p cycle, I used to do an egg mono or chocolate one the next day and then go to the five bite. It sounds hard and it was but fluids really nauseated me so I didn't rely on food.

I'll stare at bread and convince myself it's mouldy, or think about chocolate and imagine they've crushed up ants into it at the factory.
If I get really hungry and I've had my daily calorie allowance I imagine a long line of cockroaches crawling into my mouth and down my throat.

I drink green tea and stare at myself in the mirror for like an hour straight. As someone said, getting used to a low calorie amount helps a lot of people, so I guess the thought that it'll get better once you start works? I'm not really sure. Sadness also helps, as it's a huge trigger for ED behaviors. It's really hard to find willpower - trust me, I used to binge like every day - but once you do, it's not easy to let go of.

It gets easier over time. You get used to being hungry and it loses its power over you. You may fail a bit at first but the more you succeed the more you succeed (if that makes sense)
Be honest with yourself too. It doesn’t help to lie to yourself about what you’re capable of at this moment. If you can only restrict to 1200 or whatever the number is for you then do just that. Do it until you’re good at it. Then lower it a couple hundred. Wash, rinse, repeat.

And don't go all in at once, or you're destined to fail. Personally, every day I set my goal at the highest possible, 1300, but I always try to go lower. So if I eat more than I expected, I'm not heartbroken and I don't end up binging because I messed up. It's always the best method for me, I've been sticking to 500-900 calories recently. Depends on the day.
And set goals, achievable ones. Baby steps. It's okay to have an ultimate goal, but don't let that be your only motivation. Set it for maybe 3lbs down, go down a belt hole, successfully stay on track for 3 days. Goals like that. You'll feel fulfilled off of them and be more motivated when you keep on succeeding.

I first watched this video. After watching I was binge free for a week then went right back to it.
This video has a lot but not enough. You have to change the environment and actively identify your triggers. I now know what triggers my binges and this SERIOUSLY HELPS ME AVOID THEM.
For me I binge whenever there is a sudden change in routine/location. My parents being divorced and me still going back and forth this literally happens EVERY flipping week. It never used to bother me but now for some reason it is connected mentally to binging. I cant explain why but it is.
Although that is not step one.
Step one is STOP. Stop weighing and stop body checking. When you wake up in the morning put on loose clothes and avoid the mirrors. Put the scale up on a self and keep it out of sight until your eating is back under control. You dont need to know what you weigh because you already know you wont like it and it will cause you to enter the "oh fuck it" and eat everything cycle.
So then step TWO: IDENTIFY.
Start to analyze when and where the binges occur and avoid those scenarios. Also think about what foods trigger you. Put them out of sight but don't restrict. For me chocolate was a trigger so I put all of the chocolates in the house in a box and put it up on top of a self. But I let myself have desserts because having none just made cravings worse. I let myself eat jelly beans, fruit and whip cream, and sometimes Twinkies or other things I don't really like but for some reason craved.
Remember- No scale. Once a week you can check but ONLY when you are in a binge free mind set.
Step three: MAINTENANCE OVER RESTRICTION OR BINGING
The next thing I had to do was eat normal. No restriction and no binging. Over restricting after sugar binges and stretching your stomach entirely too much only will leading to more binging. If you can't eat maintenance (think 1500-1800cal) then you can not restrict either. Its just a fact. Master your mind before the body. If during this time you mini binge and eat 3k, accept it and move on. Get right back to maintenance. Only consider it a serious binge if you exceed 3k or what ever your beyond full line is (for me it is 3k. Once I pass 3k I tend to spiral out of control until I'm at like 5k+).
Step four: ACCEPTANCE (and eventual restriction)
Accept what you did and move on. Accept the weight you've gained and what you did. This is the hardest but most essential part. If you continue to binge, you will continue to gain weight. Forget water weight, you've gained and thats that. But remember you used to weigh this much and that this is actually a healthy thing for your body. Sure it may feel like hitting the reset button on what ever "progress" you thought you had made but that is BS. Weight is not a game and you can not lose or gain indefinitely. Continue either way and you will die... Thing is though starvation will kill you a hell of a lot faster.
Once you are comfortable eating maintenance and have accepted your body (to a degree, dont have to like it but just dont utterly despise it to the point you are mentally out of control) start to eat what you know you like and know you can control. For me healthy eating wasn't just something to lose weight, it was food I actually loved. I love the tart creamy taste of no fat Greek yogurt and fresh kiwi in the morning (150cal breakfast). It makes me happy and satisfies my idea of restriction.
Fact is though this is not an over night fix. You can chat with me whenever and I'll even walk you through a rough patch if you need
