Just don’t eat. That’s what you do. You don’t think about what you’re still allowed to eat today or how good it will feel if you binge or how you will make up for it later. You dont think about all the techniques you still need to master in order to resist or what you will learn from this binge or how it will be better next time. You don’t push today’s responsibilities onto tomorrow. You just don’t eat right here and now, it’s that simple and you know it.

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking fuck it, I can binge now and start fresh tomorrow. I can’t do this anymore These cravings, this hunger, this urge, they all are staying forever unless I do something. Unless I binge. I just need a fresh start and that will be the last time.

But you‘ve been down this road already and you how it goes: You binge, you don’t even enjoy it, and then the next day you have to step on that scale and see the consequences. Is that what you want? Do you want to see a weight gain of 5+ pounds tomorrow morning? Weight that you will have to work your ass off in the next few days for just to lose again? All that effort just to get back to where you are right now? Those next few days that were supposed to jumpstart your will power will all just be wasted on undoing your one huge, not even satisfying binge. And then, if you even manage to restrict successfully, those same feelings that pushed you to binge will come back.

But what happens if you don’t give in? What happens if you endure these feelings and make it to the other side? First of all, these next few days will go towards reaching new low weights instead of losing the same 5 pounds over and over again. You will be able to see your body like it has never been seen before. Secondly, you will feel a sense of immense accomplishment every morning that you wake up and realize you didn’t give in. You will have an opportunity to face new challenges as the urge to binge continues to present itself. Finally, you will eventually find out what happens when you break the cycle. Does the urge to get stronger? Does it get easier? Do you finally reach your goal weight? I can’t say because I have not gotten that far yet. But you will go there and you will find out. And no matter what, you will be able to feel the satisfaction of holding and using your power to say no.

Here are some mental exercises and activities you can do to remind yourself to say no.

    • Have a Mental Binge. Close your eyes and walk through what you with you would eat and how it would feel. Feel the specific emotions and sensations you will experience. The first bite, the immediate regret, the guilt and pain, the feeling of punishing yourself by continuing to eat. Is that what you want in real life?
    • Increase your awareness of all physical emotional and mental experiences that are happening right now. What does the urge feel like? Is it a hunger? Is it an anxiety? Is it even real? Are there other, more positive, sensations that exist right now that you can focus on instead?
    • Visualize Yourself at Your Goal Weight. Think about what people say, how you feel, how you look. You will remember that it is worth it. And there’s actually no other choice than to reach your goal weight. You can’t stay where you are right now, it’s no way to live.
    • Make a To do and Pros and Cons List for Both Scenarios. If you binge, you will have to take a laxative and shit all that shit out. You will have to attempt to fast tomorrow and feel the hunger pains and anxiety. You will have to look at the scale and see a higher number than is there right now. Or you can go about your day as normal. Eating when you’re hungry and doing your normal activities without a second thought about food. Which path do you want to take?
